Overview

Join us for a TrailsFest Celebration and our trails heritage for National Trails Day. We will be working at Wachusett Mountain on the Worcester Chapter's outstanding Pine Hill Trail restoration project. Join us for some fun during the celebration of National Trails Day. Join the Pine Hill Trail Crew for this trip as we have some fun giving back to this local trail, doing rock work and other related tasks as the multi-year Reconstruction Project on the Pine Hill Trail continues. The Pine Hill Trail at Wachusett Mountain was originally constructed by the CCC as a steep fall-line ski trail in the 1930's and maintained by mowing the slopes with scythes. However, its popularity with hikers changed the trail into a ribbon of different paths spread out 30 to 50 feet wide over steep, eroded sections of the trail. Since 2002 The Worcester Chapter's volunteer trail crew has been creating a hardened trail treadway which has allowed for re-vegetation along the newly created staircase. Join the Pine Hill Trail Crew for the reconstruction and trail hardening work which consists of setting rock steps, building rock structures for drainage and waterbars, placing edge rocks and scree walls for trail definition. On different days we will be splitting and shaping rocks, quarrying rock with high line systems or building the trail treadway itself. Join experienced Leaders to learn the fundamentals of safely moving rocks, trail stabilization and treadway protection. Learn the mechanical advantage of moving rocks with a grip hoist and highline system. What should I expect? A typical work party starts at 8:30am and runs until about 4pm. Meet behind the Wachusett Mountain Visitor's Center, at 8:30am, where parking is available. After loading the tools, discussing the work for the day and safety, we will drive to the work site on the summit and return between 4:00 to 5:00pm. It is OK to join us for a portion of the day if you can't participate all day. You can hike back to the Visitor's Center or drive your car to the summit for a quick departure. This is a tremendous opportunity to be involved in a local volunteer trail project whose results will be around for decades. No experience is required to participate and we encourage first timers, beginners and experienced trail volunteers alike to participate and help out. WR Chapter Trail Crew Leaders will provide training for the equipment we use, as well as necessary instruction, encouragement and supervision. We have a large selection of trail tools and specialized equipment available and will supply the hardhats. Please bring your own lunch, water, snacks, work clothes and gloves, sturdy boots, and other clothing appropriate for the weather (projects run rain or
