Wachusett Mountain State Reservation,
Massachusetts, Central,
MA
This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Spring Hiking Program (SHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. Building on the instructional hikes, and getting to know your gear, this outing has extended trekking while adding more total elevation gained during the trip. Breaks will generally be succinct and defined for hydration and snacks, with a possible extended lunch. This trip in the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation (WMSR), in both MA towns of Princeton and Westminster, will feature a "lollipop" loop over the summit of Mt Wachusett (2,006') with a lot of the trail following the long distance Midstate Trail of MA. Mt. Wachusett is the highest peak in MA east of the CT River and the WMSR is home to the largest tract of old growth forest east of the CT river with some trees as old as 350 yrs. Anticipate a slow-moderate pace across 4 miles, gaining approximately 900 feet of elevation. Estimated hiking time for this trip, depending on the group and conditions, is generally up to 6 hours. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
