Are you interested in hiking and would like some help getting started? Or maybe you have hiking experience and would like to come back after a break. Join us for a weekend of learning by doing! Learn everything necessary for safe and enjoyable hiking, including gear and clothing, hydration and nutrition, finding your way, and safety. This program combines light indoor instruction with plenty of on-trail practice under the guidance of two experienced volunteer leaders. Leaders will select hikes appropriate to the conditions at the time. No prior hiking experience required and the pace will be relaxed. Participants should have the baseline fitness to be on the move for several hours with reasonable breaks, as we will spend about five hours on trail each day. Lodging is in a hostel in the heart of the White Mountains, featuring comfortable bunks, hot showers, and a full kitchen. Sleeping is in shared bunkrooms and not separated by gender. We will prepare Saturday breakfast and dinner and Sunday breakfast as a group; bring your own lunches. The program starts at 7:30pm Friday and this location is about a three hour drive from Boston. When you click on the registration link, you will be directed to our registration system (free account required). Sign up there and a leader will be in touch to arrange a short (15-20 minutes) conversation regarding preparation and gear for the trip. Open to AMC members and non-members. Join the AMC today and register at the member rate; see "related links". To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.
