Overview

Accidents can happen to anyone, but luck favors the prepared. Are you prepared to get yourself out of trouble while climbing? Self-rescue is a set of skills that you can use to get an injured climber off 5th class terrain without external assistance. Even when assistance from a rescue team is needed, applying self-rescue techniques can accelerate the rescue and reduce any consequences. This two-day, volunteer-taught course will cover techniques for situations in multi-pitch climbing. Our focus will be on multi-pitch trad climbing, but most of these techniques are applicable to any multi-pitch climbing and some to single-pitch climbing. Some techniques are for leaders, some for followers, and some for either. In particular, we will cover techniques for: * ascending or descending to an injured climber, * lowering or raising an injured climber, and * rappelling with an injured climber. We will also discuss techniques and practices for staying out of trouble in the first place. Prerequisites: - multi-pitch climbing experience - experience with direct belays (off the anchor) from the top of a pitch for a follower using a plate/ATC device in guide mode - experience rappelling with an extended device and brake hand backup - familiarity with anchor building principles (SRENE/ERNEST/etc) This two-day course will run from 8:30AM - 5:00PM on Saturday May 4th and 9:00AM-1:00PM on Sunday May 5th. Please only register if you can attend both sessions. Preference will be given to New Seconds Leaders and prospective leaders, AMC Boston Rock Program volunteers and trip leaders, but members of the larger Boston climbing community who meet our prerequisites may register / apply.
