Canary Islands,
International,
Spain
The Canary Islands is an autonomous community of Spain located off the coast of Morocco. The islands are known for their year-round springlike temperatures, beautiful beaches and volcanic mountains. This trip will explore trails and culture on two Canarian Islands: Tenerife and La Gomera. Warm temperatures and clear skies in March make it the ideal time to visit. Tenerife, the Canaries largest Island, boasts ancient volcanic mountains with diverse landscapes crisscrossed with trails. Pico del Teide is Spain's highest mountain and the third tallest volcano in the world. On Tenerife, we will circle the island visiting Parque Rural Anaga, Parque Rural Teno, and Parque Nacional del Teide, as well as culturally significant cities, towns and villages. The Anga Mountains are home to centuries old laurel forests, villages and green valleys. The highest parts of the peninsula are covered with a dense subtropical forest known as a laurisilva cloud forest. The Northeast is also the site of the city of La Laguna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with historic colonial architecture and museums. Our three days around Parque Rural Teno will be spent enjoying rugged mountains with cactus formations, wildflowers and protected birds. Our travels will take us to the towns of Masca and Erjos, and to the Punta de Teno lighthouse from our home base in Santiago del Teide. We transfer by ferry to La Gomera Island or "Isla Magica" (The Magic Island) known for its rugged coastline with small black-sand beaches and its wild mountain landscape. Just twelve miles long, La Gomera's mountains are the home of the Parque Nacional de Garajonay, featuring a prehistoric forest crammed with vegetation. Alto de Garajonay, La Gomera's highest peak, is believed to have been a ceremonial site of ancient Gomerians.
