Overview

Join us for a hike up Mt. Garfield on June 8! What to expect: • We will hike up Mt. Garfield, a 4,500-foot peak in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, with stunning views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness and the Franconia Ridge. • The hike is 10 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 3,000+ feet. It will take us at 6-8 hours to complete (plan on hiking most of the day), including breaks and lunch at the summit if weather permits. • This hike is rated as strenuous, and requires a good level of fitness and hiking experience. You should be comfortable with steep and rocky terrain, and able to maintain a moderate pace. There will be several water crossings and possibly muddy conditions. The summit scramble can be steep and exposed; if you have any concerns with your ability to complete this hike, feel free to discuss with the leaders! • As it will be a June hike in the White Mountains, we should be prepared for variable weather conditions, such as sun, rain, wind, and possibly snow. Please bring appropriate clothing and gear, such as layers, rain jacket, hat, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses, hiking boots, poles, water, snacks, and lunch. • To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions, early road closings, or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified in advance or during the weekend. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. Who can join: • This hike is open to all AMC members and guests, but please note that it is not a beginner hike. You should have prior experience with similar hikes, and be confident in your abilities and endurance. • We are happy to announce that Pretzel the Hiking Hound, a friendly and well-trained dog, will be joining us for this hike. If you wish to bring your own dog, please discuss with us first, as we want to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants and pets. • Space is limited to 7 experienced hikers, so please register as soon as possible. The deadline for registration is June 5.

Included among the many outings he leads each year for the Chapter's Hiking/Backpacking Committee are the single-day Presidential Range traverse on the summer solstice, and the Map & Compass course in the fall.
