Overview

4-5 miles. The easy part of this 2- part hike is through a beautiful pine forest on needle-laden paths with some exposed roots on the Nehantic Trail out and back from the CCC camp area 1.6 miles. If you wish to hike further, hike 2.4 miles out and back through mixed hardwoods on the Pachaug Trail, hoping to see ladyslippers in bloom in June. Possible optional rocky path for a short time along Lowden Brook. Meet at parking area for 9:30 start. From I-395 take exit for Rte. 138. Go east thru Voluntown, past Rte. 49 south, past Town Grill and Pizza on right. Take next left onto Rte. 49 (north). Continue 0.6 mi & go left just before Smokey Bear sign. Continue 0.7 on paved roads in park, bearing right at statue to CCC area (first open picnic area) NOT at field near rhododendron area.
