Fun Summer Backpacking in Harriman State Park ( 7/20 - 7/21 )

For folks who enjoy backpacking in the summer heat! With views of lakes and ripening blueberries! It is not to be missed. Overview We welcome beginner level backpackers who just need to practice or backpackers with experience to share. Saturday we will backpack 5.5 miles carrying our packs up 1700' of elevations to reach our camp near shelter and access to water. Participants are expected to be self-sufficient with food and backpack/tenting gear. We will hang our food to protect it overnight or bring bear resistant canisters that we place outside camp overnight. We expect everyone to practice Leave No Trace. This includes using a WAG bag. See the link below to learn Leave No Trace Practices. Sunday morning, we will break camp and hike back 4.6 miles to catch the 12:20 bus out of Tuxedo back to Port Authority Bus Terminal. Limited to 10 participants. Don't hesitate to reach out to us leaders with questions before or after registering! Heavy rain reschedules; light rain does not cancel. HIKE BEGINS: 10:30 AM at the Tuxedo NJ Transit Train Station. TRANSPORTATION: Car: Commuter Parking Lot at (Latitude: 41.196122, Longitude: -74.18422). Daily Parking is $3.00 per day, 7 days/ week. Payment is made with Pay On-Line at ParkMobile-Parking App on the App or Google Store (reference zone 4515 or call 877-727-5730). Please call ahead to verify parking rules and arrive early to park correctly. Public Transportation: Take the 9:10 AM Shortline Bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal Gate 408 to the Tuxedo Train Station which arrives at 10:15 AM. Return will be via the 12:20 PM Shortline Bus from across the Tuxedo NJ Transit Train Station to Port Authority Bus terminal, arriving at 1:30 PM. PREPARATION: Readiness: Recent hiking experience of at least 6 miles and the ability to carry 30-lbs on your back. Equipment: Hiking boots, rain layers, headlamp, trekking poles, backpack, 50-degree sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent, a change of non-cotton base layers and a change of socks with plastic bags (so that you can dry off your feet if they get wet and use fresh socks and line your wet boots with plastic bags to continue hiking). A stove, fuel and cooking supplies are needed. *Bug and tick repellent and face net are strongly advised. Meals: 2 lunches (ready-to-eat), 1 dinner (dehydrated) and 1 breakfast (dehydrated/dry) and energy snacks. Water filter and hydration bladder to collect water for the evening and morning. A hanging food bag to store your food safely on the bear hangs will be needed
