Overview

Let's section hike the Appalachian Trail adjoining Maryland! Please join AMC as we extend our series of day hikes along this iconic trail into neighboring states, about 10 miles at a time. We will stop at shelters, and overlooks along the way, imagining the daunting adventure of through-hiking, but in baby steps. We'll hike the fourth Pennsylvania segment in the Michaux State Forrest on Sunday July 21, between Shippensburg Rd and Pine Grove Furnace State Park , starting around 9:00 a.m., ascending 1100 feet over 11.7 miles. The trail in this section is hilly, narrow and rocky, so it is essential that you wear good hiking shoes with grips on the tread. Bring water and snacks. Watch the forecast and dress for the weather, including rain gear. Plan on being out for 6 hours. This trip is a point-to-point route and will therefore require car shuttling. A separate hiking trip along the third Penna segment, is scheduled the previous day, on Saturday July 20. The leader will be car-camping in the state park on Saturday night, and participants joining both hikes are welcome to share the campsite or reserve a different site on their own. Registration is required for each hiking activity, while the overnight camping is not an AMC event. No dogs on this trip. This hike is suitable for children from about 12 years old and up who are interested in climbing over big rocks, have some stamina, and who can follow parent's directions to stay back from cliffs. All participants will sign a release before hiking. To register and receive additional details, please send email to the leader, Jeff Clyman, at [email protected]

Retired from a career in the healthcare industry, I am now pursuing a passion for adventuring outdoors, seeking to imbue others with the same spirit. Since hiking and backpacking have always been favorite activities, I have recently begun working with volunteer crews to improve local trails, leading me to fully appreciate the back-breaking work and dedication of others, which countless outdoors enthusiasts enjoy so routinely.
