The Tour De Monte Rosa is the journey of a lifetime. It's more than a hike or a trek, it's an exploration of the Italian and Swiss valleys and villages, and immersion in the culture of the area. The spectacular Monte Rosa massif boasts ten summits over 4,000m and is the largest massif in western Europe. Majestic mountains, wild high passes, spectacular valleys, remote hamlets, traditional villages, flower filled meadows, leafy forests, mountain tarns, demanding ascents, breathtaking descents and miles and miles of superb trails. The Tour promises a journey through an amazingly diverse landscape, through a region rich in history, culture and tradition. The Tour De Monte Rosa is an old route. First hiked in 1789 by Horace Benedict de Saussure, a wealthy Swiss scientist and a great mountaineer; he went accompanied by his son to study the orography, indigenous populations and all the unique phenomena that characterize the mountains. Until his trips, the areas and peaks were unnamed or named by the communities that lived on them. Many followed in his footsteps and explored further in the 19th century. It was all but forgotten in the next century due to the two world wars. In 1994, the Tour Monte Rosa Association was founded, continuing and improving upon the region's long mountaineering history.
