Overview

In the shadow of the iconic Italian Dolomites, nestled among the many valleys, passes, rivers and lakes that surround the South Tyrol territory, lies the little village of Oberbozen. From here we will alternate easy day hikes with forays into some of the nearby small cities of Italy to give us a broad experience of the natural beauty and culture that blends Italian and Austrian life. In these shadows we will find some of the highest pastures in Europe (think "Sound of Music!"), unusual geologic formations, sweeping vistas of peaks and mountain ranges, and any number of historical churches, museums, markets, and, yes, culinary delights. We are as likely to find a field of horses or bovines as we are to find a preserved prehistoric human, known only as the Otzi Ice Man, whose remains, recovered from a melting glacier, have informed much of the anthropological thinking of our age. Nestled between our hiking days, we take advantage of the local free cable car, bus and/or train system to visit Bolzano, Trento, and Merano. Join us for this delightful South Tyrolean sampler! After reading our prospectus, please contact the leaders for an application package.
