This is a free event. Invitation is extended to women with limited or little outdoor experience who want to learn basic practical skills to be able to recreate out of doors with confidence. This workshop recognizes that women have unique obstacles that can make enjoyment of the outdoors challenging. It is inspired by all women adventurers and most notably, Ruby Horwood, former AMC Del Val Chapter Chair and the first female Chairperson of the entire Appalachian Mountain Club organization. If you are a woman and have wanted to try tent camping or already enjoy hiking local trails but would like to become comfortable venturing further, then this workshop is for you. Please note that although you will be learning how to set up a campsite and erect your tent, we are not actually camping out - this is not an overnight event. We will focus on practical skills. They can be applied whether you chose to adventure by yourself or with family and friends or other groups. Topics to be reviewed will include things like: - Basic map reading - Responsible fire building - How to set up a standard tent - Setting up a temporary rain shelter - How to cross creeks safely - Campsite cooking - Show and tell demonstration by the facilitators No previous experience or specialized equipment is needed, although we recommend everyone bring along a folding chair, at least one liter of water, a packed lunch and other personal snacks. The day will involve hiking in the woods between 2-3 miles, so participants will need boots/hiking shoes/trainers, possibly a rain jacket/windbreaker, and other attire you need to be comfortable. Exact location of event within French Creek State Park is TBD. It will be communicated to registrants prior to the event. Fifty years ago, a remarkable woman, Ruby Horwood, was a trailblazer for the AMC-DV Chapter. She was a DV Chapter Chair and a few years later became the first female President of AMC (clubwide). In addition to many other achievements, she was deeply involved in protecting land that is now our beloved Delaware Water Gap NRA and Franconia Notch in the White Mountains. In the coming months, the Delaware Valley Chapter will be honoring Ruby at select outings with Ruby 'moments' - a brief discussion of her contributions. We hope you will join us to honor her accomplishments and celebrate 50 years of women trailblazers.
