Overview

We'll hike from the AMC Mohican Outdoor Center and ascend 500 ft in the first half mile to join the Appalachian Trail on the Kittatinny Ridge. The hike along the open rock ridge is mostly level and offers great views of the Paulinskill Valley. We'll then visit the Catfish Fire Tower (elev.1565'). which provides even more extensive views of the area. Return is by the Rattlesnake Swamp Trail through rhododendron groves and back to the northern end of camp. Trail is very rocky. This is a Ruby Horwood event. Fifty years ago a remarkable woman, Ruby Horwood, was a trailblazer for the AMC-DV Chapter. She was a DV Chapter Chair and a few years later became the first female President of AMC (clubwide). In addition to many other achievements, she was deeply involved in protecting land that is now our beloved Delaware Water Gap NRA and Franconia Notch in the White Mountains. In the coming months, the Delaware Valley Chapter will be honoring Ruby at select outings with Ruby 'moments' - a brief discussion of her contributions. We hope you will join us to honor her accomplishments and celebrate 50 years of women trailblazers. Participants are encouraged to bring a friend or neighbor to help us celebrate! Total hike distance - 4.5 miles Hike will start at 1:30 PM from the north end of camp. This hike is part of the Mohican Fall Fest, which will feature a full day of activities including a morning hike on the Coppermine Trail, paddling on Catfish Pond, Nature Center tours, Wilderness First Aid and backpack packing demos, a gourmet barbecue lunch ($20 donation requested), and a campfire with s'mores & telescopes in the evening Leaders - Lennie Steinmetz & Pete Jarrett. Contact Lennie Steinmetz [email protected] or Pete Jarrett [email protected] for additional details on meeting location and Fall Fest events.
