Overview

The Whites are past peak? No problem! Come check out Moose Mountains Reservation and Moose Mountain Recreation! The last two years this location has been at peak at about this date, with the blueberry bushes on fire in this rare New England pitch pine rocky ridge natural community. We will enjoy a 5 mile, relaxed paced hike up the Burrows Farm Trail, followed by the Moose Mountains Trail into the pitch pines, with a diversion over to a northerly viewpoint. Now on established trails on Moose Mountain Recreation land, we will continue to the often missed main summit of the larger Moose Mountain, through an area of taller conifers. After we've enjoyed a southerly view adjacent to the summit, we will continue in loop fashion along the boundary of the Ellis Hatch Wildlife Management Area, crossing back into Moose Mountains Reservation and back down to the Burrows Farm Trail and the parking area. With 1,059' of elevation gain, much of the trail is gentle to moderate, with some steep sections. On the return there is a section where footing is rougher, with less traveled, rockier aged woods road terrain. Be prepared for cooler and/or wet weather, with good hiking footwear. We will take our time enjoying this unique environment and these last bits of gorgeous foliage!
