Overview

Hike start time MOVED UP FROM 9:45 to 9:00 due to predicted heat. 5+ miles. This hike has steep ascents and descents with some excellent views. We will have a gentle start along the Branch Brook Trail, route of a former trolley track. Then we join the Mattatuck Trail and climb, sometimes steeply over rock slab, to the Leatherman's Cave. Soon after we'll pause at Crane's Lookout. The trail descends to cross Rte. 6 and enter Black Rock SP. After passing the pond we'll climb up to Black Rock Lookout for more views. We'll return round the pond on park trails to the parking area. Hiking poles are recommended. Trails will be covered with leaves so may be slippery. Bring water and snacks. Meet at 8:45 for a 9:00 am start. Park near Rte. 6 entrance section of parking lot on the left. Directions: Rte. 8 exit #38 for Rte. 6W towards Watertown. At Jct. Rte. 109 continue on Rte. 6 for 0.4 miles. Turn right into the park. PLEASE REGISTER WITH LEADER USING E-MAIL.
