Hatfield Hill Road, Bethany, ct,
Connecticut, West of River,
CT
Meet at 9:00 for a prompt 9:15 start for this easy hike along unpaved forest roads and trails on Regional Water Authority land. RWA does not allow dogs. There is one moderately-challenging section of 0.12 miles round-trip to the West River: for anyone who doesn't want to do this out-and-back trail, it's easy to sit it out. We will go through the woods to the West River, then loop back to the trailhead. There's a road walk on the grassy shoulder of Hatfield Hill Road for 0.32 miles, and then we'll return to the woods as we walk around Lake Bethany. At the far end of the lake, there's a road walk for 0.24 miles on quiet Hoadley Road before we go back into the woods again. There is long grass in some areas, so long pants are recommended as tick protection. Poles are optional, but recommended. Waterproof hiking footwear is a must, as are water, snack, sunscreen, insect and tick repellent, personal medications and first-aid supplies. Parking is near the power lines that cross Hatfield Hill Road, roughly 0.5 miles from Rte. 69 or roughly 0.4 miles from Downs Road. We will park behind a locked gate, which will be open only from 9:00-9:15. The gate will be locked while we hike, so leaving early is not an option. There is a porta-potty here. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Email the leader by 6 p.m. the evening prior to the hike: L: Joanna Miller, [email protected]. Limit: 15. Heavy rain cancels.
