New Hampshire, White Mountains,
NH United States
Join us for a winter day hike to two New Hampshire 4,000 footers: South Twin (4,899') and North Twin (4,759'). South Twin in particular features spectacular views from its wide open summit, weather depending. Expect an approximately 13.5-mile out-and-back hike at a moderate pace with approximately 3,900 feet of elevation gain (the distance is significantly longer in winter due to seasonal road closures). This hike is appropriate for hikers with experience hiking other four thousand footers of similar elevation gain and distance in the White Mountains, Green Mountains, Maine, or Adirondack Mountains in the last year. While the summit of South Twin is wide open and fairly exposed to weather, prior experience hiking above treeline in winter is not required (and indeed, we welcome participants who are looking to increase their comfort hiking more exposed terrain in winter). Microspikes and mountaineering snowshoes are required for this hike. Full crampons and an ice axe are not required. Depending on weather conditions, be prepared for a strenuous all-day hike and potential winter conditions with cold, wind, ice, snow, and the possibility of breaking trail. Please be an experienced winter hiker in good physical condition, with full winter gear including insulated winter boots, microspikes, snowshoes, face protection, and multiple clothing layers. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions, early road closings, or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified in advance or during the weekend. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, February 9 as a backup date for this hike should conditions prohibit us from hiking on Saturday.
