Sunday, December 29, 2024, 9:00AM - 4:00PM
TBD,
New York, Catskills,
NY
The idea is pretty simple: Sign up for the date you can go and we hope for snow. If it snows, we go skiing in the Catskills. If it doesn't snow, the trip is canceled. Where we ski will be determined by snow conditions. If it snows a lot, say 16 inches or more, then we may attempt steeper terrain suitable for alpine touring or telemark gear . If it snows only a foot or so, we'll stick to cross country ski trails with smoother surfaces, using Nordic backcountry ski gear. Backcountry skiing is for skiers with advanced skills. This outing will not be suitable for novice or intermediate skiers. This is not a 'Backcountry 101' type of outing. You should have previous experience using your own (reliable!) ski equipment and you need to be fully familiar with its use. For Alpine Touring or Telemark skiing, you should be comfortable skiing black diamond trails at the ski resort. Equipment must include touring bindings (free heel for climbing) and climbing skins for uphill purchase. A helmet and goggles/sunglasses are required. The other equipment and clothing is similar to what you would bring for snowshoeing (daypack for extra gloves, hat, clothing, snacks, lunch, water, ski wax, etc.). For Nordic Backcountry skiing, you should be comfortable skiing black diamond trails at the Nordic center (on your cross country skis, both uphill and downhill). Equipment must include a capable touring setup including skis with metal edges and fish scale bases for uphill purchase. The other equipment and clothing is similar to what you would bring for snowshoeing (daypack for extra gloves, hat, clothing, snacks, lunch, water, ski wax, etc.). Email leader to register, or if you have questions about the outing, required gear, etc.
