Highland Center, Madison Springs Hut,
New Hampshire, White Mountains,
NH
Experience the ultimate family challenge on this two-night trip into the heart of the Presidential Range. We will overnight in bunk rooms and the AMC's Highland Center and then set off Saturday morning after breakfast for a hike up to the Madison Spring Hut. This trip is strenuous, so children and adults should be in very good physical condition. The hike up to the Madison Springs Hut via the Valley Way Trail is a rewarding yet challenging journey through New Hampshire's White Mountains. Beginning at the Appalachia trailhead, the trail ascends steadily through a dense forest of hardwoods and evergreens, following the Valley Way Brook. As we climb higher, we will encounter rocky terrain and steeper inclines, with switchbacks offering occasional relief. The route is known for its rugged beauty, with moss-covered boulders and the sounds of cascading water providing a soothing backdrop. Near the tree line, the trail opens up to reveal panoramic views of the Presidential Range. Upon reaching the Madison Springs Hut, perched at an elevation of about 4,800 feet, we will be treated to breathtaking vistas of Mount Madison and its surrounding peaks, making the effort worthwhile. It is 7.6 miles with just over 4000 feet of elevation gain. After dropping our gear at the hut, weather permitting, we will do an optional climb up to the summit of Mount Madison, the 5th highest peak in New England, with panoramic views of the White Mountains. After a day of hiking, you return to the hut for happy hour and a hearty dinner with fellow hikers, enjoying the alpine sunset. An overnight stay at the hut provides a cozy reprieve from the mountain elements. In the morning, a communal breakfast awaits before we set out to summit Mount Adams, New England's second-highest peak at 5,774 feet (weather permitting). The hike from Mount Adams back down to the car descends steeply, requiring careful footing on rocks and roots, while gradually transitioning back into a dense forest canopy. The hike out is approximately 8.5 miles and rewards you with unforgettable high-altitude vistas and alpine experiences.
