Overview

Join us for a classic late November ascent of Mt Madison (5,366 ft). With winter upon us, the trees will be bare and, weather permitting, we will be treated to gorgeous views of northern NH during the ascent and a striking 360-degree panorama from the summit! This will be a strenuous 8.6-mile out-and-back hike with approximately 4,100 ft of elevation gain. We will hike at a moderate pace and, depending on the trail and weather conditions, will expect to hike for 7-9 hours. As this is a late November hike with above treeline sections, trail conditions may entail hiking up and down icy and slippery rocks and full-on deep snowpack. Because of the potential for wintry conditions, we are looking for hikers with previous winter experience. Participants will have completed some snowy or cold weather hikes and be looking to expand their winter skills. Familiarity with microspikes and snowshoes is a requirement for this hike; the use of crampons is a plus but experience is not strictly needed. A headlamp and extra batteries are required and participants should be comfortable hiking out in the dark. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt-out.
