Join Judith and Ian for a winter day hike to Mt. Moosilauke (4,800'). Weather depending, we hope to experience phenomenal 360 degree views from Moosilauke's above tree line summit. Expect an approximately 9-mile hike at a moderate pace with approximately 2,500' of elevation gain. Depending on weather conditions, be prepared for a strenuous 7-10 hour hike and potential winter conditions with cold, wind, ice, snow, and the possibility of breaking trail. Please be an experienced winter hiker in good physical condition, with full winter gear including winter boots, microspikes, snowshoes, full crampons, wind protection, face protection, and multiple clothing layers. Participants must have considerable experience hiking 4,000 footers in the winter, should have some experience hiking on the more exposed 4,000 footers in winter, and must maintain an active, vigorous fitness regimen. Though our route up Moosilauke is relatively sheltered, the final portion of the hike to the summit is above tree line and thus fully exposed to the weather. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, January 5 as a backup date for this hike if weather conditions prevent us hiking on Saturday, January 4.
