NOTE: Between 12/15 and 12/17, registration for this hike will be prioritized for hikers who have completed the "Winter Workshop & Hike" on 12/7. On 12/18, registration will be open to all hikers. Join us on a loop hike through Bradley Palmer State Park and parts of both Willowdale Mill Reservation and Vineyard Hill Reservation on the North Shore. Starting in Bradley Palmer, we will walk along the Ipswich River, into Willowdale Mill Reservation. We will then return to Bradley Palmer to follow a section of the Appleton Branch of the Bay Circuit Trail through that park from north to south as it ascends & descends Moon Hill, passing through meadows, into & out of the woods, and by some equestrian areas. After leaving the BCT near the south end of the park, we will stop for lunch at a picnic area and then explore some of the trails in Vineyard Hill Reservation, before returning to our starting point in Bradley Palmer. Parts of the trail by the Ipswich River are narrow, with roots and/or uneven footing, involving some short, steep descents and ascents. Otherwise, footing is generally smooth throughout the trip as the trail varies from flat to rolling hills to a steady incline & descent as the trail passes over Moon Hill. The complete loop covers approximately 7 miles with approximately 500 feet of elevation gain, for a hiking time of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. Dress in layers for WINTER CONDITIONS: a moisture-wicking inner layer (e.g. polypro), plus a layer for warmth (e.g. fleece), plus an outer layer for water/wind resistance (e.g. wind/rain jacket and pants) are highly recommended. No blue jeans or cotton, and wear wool socks. Bring a hat, neck warmer/scarf, and gloves/mittens. Appropriate hiking footwear is required (no sneakers or sandals); your boots should be waterproof with good tread. Bring the required essentials in your day pack (no back sacs with strings), 2+ liters of water, lunch and snacks, first aid and anti-blister supplies, and an extra pair of wool socks. Be prepared to bring and use microspikes, in case of icy trails. Hiking poles and gaiters are highly recommended if you use them. Sorry, no dogs; thanks for understanding. Steady rain/snow and possible thunderstorms/lightning will cancel the hike. A chance of showers or flurries will not cancel the hike. Car pooling is always encouraged. Meeting spot, directions, and reminders will be e-mailed to confirmed participants prior to the hike. Parking at Bradley Palmer State Park is free this time of year. The hike leaders reserve the right to adjust the route if conditions warrant it and cannot guarantee the hike will be completed by any specific time. Any questions, please contact the leaders.
