It was over 50 years ago that Leroy A. Smith, a trail worker for the Delaware Valley Chapter, lobbied the Exectutive Committee, inspired volunteers, managed the construction of, and worked tirelessly on the shelter that now bears his name on the iconic Appalachian Trail. This shelter has been a refuge for AT through hikers and other backpackers for all these years. While the actual 50th anniversary of the shelter's dedication was 2 years ago, and our previous celebration was canceled due to weather, we wanted to recognize this achievement and feel that it is never too late. Please join us in this celebration, where we will recount the building of the shelter and dedicate the anniversary with a plaque commemorating the event, and socialize with refreshements. The celebration will begin at NOON. Refreshments will be provided. Park at the State Game Lands parking lot at Katellan off Clearfield Rd. and Old Grade Rd.. Please note that getting to and from the shelter will take time because it involves hiking about 3/4 of a mile with a steep ascent and descent (about 500 feet gain and loss). Also note that this is a day of SUNDAY HUNTING. Although we will stick to the trail, please WEAR BLAZE ORANGE. Contact Trails Chair, Greg Bernet, with any questions: [email protected]
