Overview

This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at [email protected]. This hike is open to all participants in this year's Winter Hiking Program, but will be limited to 20 participants in accordance with Blue Hills regulations. This is a basic day hike intended to give you an opportunity to practice heat and energy management techniques, and to become familiar with your winter gear in a nearby environment before you head north to the mountains. We will hike for about 5-6 miles in 4-5 hours, including time for lunch and gear discussion. This hike has a wide variety of terrain, including steep ascents, steep descents and cold windy hilltops (with great views of the Boston skyline). To download a map of the Blue Hills, see http://www.friendsofthebluehills.org. Then click on "Visit" and then 'Guide and Maps". To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. Backup Plan: This is a flexible hike. In case of inclement weather, a shorter loop will be used.
