Today's short hike at dusk offers participants a stroll through the small and delightful Pool Wildlife Sanctuary as we celebrate the next day's official arrival of winter. In respect to the fading daylight, we'll limit this afternoon's walk to around 3 miles and little more than an hour. It will wind through the varied terrain of the 77-acre preserve, which serves as headquarters of the Wildlands Conservancy, an important AMC-DV Chapter conservation partner. We'll finish in darkness, so bring an illumination device. Newly constructed boardwalk through a creek wetlands area, gentle woodland trails, and a restored field habitat are among the hike's feature attractions. In addition to the boardwalk, the dirt paths here offer mostly easy grades, with no more than 300 feet of total elevation gain. Expect to see deer, abundant avian life, and possibly friendly leashed dogs, courtesy of other visitors. Stick around for an optional post-activity BYOB meal at True Blue Mediterranean, a pleasing Middle Eastern eatery about five minutes away. Meet at sanctuary parking area by 4:00 for a 4:15 PM start. Dress in anticipation of plunging evening temperatures. Substantial rain, snow, or other forms of rotten weather could cancel hike. If status in doubt, call or text hike leader by 3:00 PM.
