Overview

This hike offers some new twists on an old AMC-DV Chapter favorite: the Delaware Canal towpath walk to Homestead General Store and back. Today, we'll leave out the bridge crossing to Frenchtown, New Jersey and keep everything in Pennsy and extend the walk by 1-2 miles for a total of 9-10 miles. We'll accomplish this by starting in scenic Tinicum Park, about 1.5 miles south of the Uhlerstown covered bridge, and walk the towpath north to Upper Black Eddy. From here, at Homestead store, participants may either turn around and return, eat lunch and return, or proceed another half-mile north on the towpath, to check on the status D & L trail repairs and Greg Bernet's new trail project, and hit Homestead on their return. In any form, the Tinicum to Homestead roundtrip is around 9 miles; Tinicum to the trail closure to the north, around 10 miles. Everything along our route is as pretty as a Pennsylvania School landscape painting, deliciously historic, and for fans of Homestead's sandwiches, soups, and coffee, satisfying to the palette. For good reason, this hike (in any of its variations) continues to be one of our most popular offerings! The hike is rated moderate for distance but is otherwise quite easy. Meet at Tinicum parking area (at Erwin-Stover House) off River Road, 1.5 miles south of the Pennsylvania side of the Frenchtown Bridge, by 9:45 for a 10 AM start. Anticipate a four-hour activity. Dress for temperature and weather. Please wear orange, hat or outer layer, for safety in the event of nearby hunting. Any form of exceptionally lousy weather, from heavy rain or snow to flooding from rogue storms, may cancel. If status in doubt, phone, text, or email leader by 8:30 the morning of the activity.
