Build a hearty appetite for any Thanksgiving feasting to come on this pre-holiday 7-to-8-mile tour through these adjoining preserves at the northern tip of Hunterdon County. Your eyeballs will feast on a variety of landscapes that include quiet woodlands, active and retired agricultural fields, a picturesque pond, and the day's feature attraction: a walk along Hollow Brook ravine, aka Teetertown Ravine, a stream of exceptional beauty. Fitting for a place as secluded as here, expect some rocky trails with a few steep ups and downs, interspersed with gentle stretches along old farm lanes and a lightly traveled dirt road. Due to limited use and maintenance, some trails may be slightly grown in, but nothing impassable. Bring along enough fluids for a three-to-four-hour activity and food for a quick stop for lunch. This hike is rated vigorous for its approximately 800 feet of elevation gain and trails that can be rough in spots. Hiking poles and sturdy footwear are recommended. Dress for chillier temperatures found at an elevation close to 1000'. (Note: These lands are open to hunting. Wear orange - hat, outer layer, or both - for safety!) Meet by 9:45 for a 10 AM start. Park at the lot for the southern end of Teetertown Preserve off Pleasant Grove Road (Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County), where there is a covered picnic pavilion and a port-a-john. (Hikers coming from Lehigh Valley: Follow Route 57 from Phillipsburg, NJ through Washington, NJ to Penwell Road. Then closely monitor your GPS as road names change frequently from Warren County, to Morris, to Hunterdon.) Any form of inclement weather, from heavy rain to ice or snow, could cancel the hike. If status in doubt, phone/text/email the leader by 8:00 AM morning of hike. L Welles Lobb 610-709-4455.
