Join us for a wonderful bike tour from historic Salem back to Charlestown via mostly bike paths through the historic and bucolic towns of the near north shore. We will meet at North Station and use the MBTA to take us up to Salem for our 30-mile jaunt back to Charlestown. Highlights will include Salem, Marblehead, the tip of Castle Rock, Swampscott and the marshes of Lynn, Saugus and Evererett via the new-ish North Strand Bike Trail. We will have a sumptuous lunch at the K Pub Kitchen and Bar just off the bike trail in Saugus that has a unique fusion Asian-American menu. This ride is easy to moderate, at a relaxed moving pace of 10-12 mph. Bikers will be expected to be ready for paved to pack gravel surfaces. Bikes from road bikes (with good handling skills) to hybrids are fine. Bikers are expected to be able to handle minor repairs such as flat tires and have appropriate clothing/gear to handle the widely variable conditions typical of November and be able to carry extra clothing. Helmets required, Hi-Viz clothing and rear red Blinky lights highly recommended. Riders will self pay for the $8.00 MBTA train fare, lunch and any parking required. In event of inclement weather such as sustained rain or unseasonably cold or windy conditions; the ride will run on 11/24/2024 as the "gnarly weather" make-up day. Deferring the ride to the gnarly weather day will be at leaders discretion and communicated to registered riders via ActDB generated email. You can take the train from North Station back to Salem in the afternoon (trains leave North Station at 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm and 5:30pm).
