New Hampshire, White Mountains,
NH
This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of the program. The summit of Mount Jackson offers spectacular views of the southern Presidentials and a slight taste of the world above treeline. A steep and steady but nontechnical climb at a moderate pace will bring us to the end of the trees just short of the summit, which is then reached by a short scramble out in the open. This out-and-back hike will cover 5.2 miles and climb 2,100 feet. The objective of this hike is to give WHP participants experience in hiking a White Mountain four thousand footer in winter conditions with some weather exposure. Attention will focus on gear layering, appropriate food and fluid intake and the use of traction, including light traction (microspikes) and snowshoes. It is an excellent opportunity to use new skills, test gear and physical ability while getting to know other hikers in a pleasant and educational setting. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. WHP trip backup plan is cancel or postpone
