This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please email us at [email protected] Join us for a winter adventure in Franconia Notch. We will begin by hiking at a moderate pace to the summit of Mt Pemigewassett, also known as Indian Head. Mt Pemigewassett earned its place on the 52 with a view list by offering spectacular views on a clear day from its summit ledges. This part of our adventure will cover 3.3 miles, with elevation gain of approximately 1400 feet. Upon return to the trailhead, we will continue with a 2.6 mile loop through the Flume, a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mt Liberty. There is no fee for this popular summer tourist destination in the winter, and we will see its fabulous waterfalls and granite walls in their winter glory. Our route will pass our parking lot between Mt Pemigewassett and Flume Gorge, offering a chance to restock with water and food. The total trip will cover approximately 6 miles, with a total elevation gain of approximately 2100 feet. We expect the trip to take approximately 5 hours, including stops. The grades are moderate, and there are no major stream crossings. This is a good hike for experienced winter hikers as well as fit, 3-season hikers who have some winter experience. You will need microspikes, snowshoes (or ready access to them), plus hiking boots and layers suitable for hiking in cold winter temperatures. Fuill equipment list is below To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. Backup Plan: We can cut this short and only do Mt Pemigewassett if necessary
