Overview

For those with some previous warm weather hiking and camping experience we have created a two night program at a large group campsite at Hickory Run State Park in White Haven PA to get one on one help learning how to camp out in cold weather and combine it with hiking from that cold weather location. This will help those folks interested in starting the transition to winter backpacking. If instead you already have winter experience feel free to join us for winter camping fellowship and organized group hiking from that cold weather campsite. **Maygan Best is a backpacking leader in training under the supervision of David Mong who is the leader of record.** While we will be camped near our cars, there is no other heated space. There are vault toilets without running water. All of our activities will take place outdoors. No alcohol is allowed. There is no cost for the program but participants will need to provide all of their own hiking and camping equipment along with food. We have some gear available to loan out and we will be able to share some gear like winter stoves. The exact gear needed will depend on the weather but you can think about needing to have a sleep system rated to zero degrees. This can be achieved with a combination of pads and multiple sleeping bags. No one will be allowed to attend if we don't think you have the gear to stay warm enough. Expect to be contacted by one of the leaders for a detailed review of what you will be bringing. This program is open to families with youth 16 and up as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Contact the leader for more information or to register.

Leader

I have been leading backpacking trips for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Adirondack Mountain Club since 1975. I enjoy taking the time to look at the scenery and have a relatively slow pace. I am patient with beginners and enjoy helping them learn new skills.
