This trip is a unique offering from AMC Adventure Travel. One of the trip leaders lives near this wonderful area and is inviting his AMC friends to share some of his best-kept secrets. British Columbia's West Kootenay range offers impressive scenery comparable to that of the renowned Canadian Rockies in Banff, without the busloads of tourists or crowded hiking trails - the Canadian Rockies You Don't Know About! Our trip will begin and end in Spokane, Washington, and we'll take the scenic drive just over the border to the shores of Kootenay Lake. Here, we'll reside three nights in the historic lakeshore town of Nelson, British Columbia, and each day venture on hikes in nearby Kokanee Glacier and Valhalla Provincial Parks. After a soak at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, we'll venture on up the lakeshore to settle in for four nights at another historic town, Kaslo. More hikes await here into the alpine meadows and moraines near the glaciers in Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park. We'll be hiking for several hours most days. Many of the hikes will be quite challenging and involve some steep climbs on rocky trails. To visit these incredible places, we'll have a few days with an hour-plus drive often ending up on rough forest roads to reach the trailheads. We'll stay in comfortable hotels each night and have dinner in excellent restaurants. We'll be hiking in grizzly bear territory and may also meet moose, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, pikas, and, if we're lucky, maybe even a cougar.
