Join us for this unique opportunity to hit the trails in the beautiful Nobscot Boy Scout reservation and Sudbury Nobscot Conservation Land. We will hike ~6 miles in the forests at a moderate pace with a gain of approximately ~800 feet of elevation, going up some steep trails including a scramble up to the rocky crown of Tippling Rock (Elev. 426') with a view of Sudbury Valley and Boston, Nobscot Hill, the BCT's highest point (602'), and old Indigenous ridge paths. Our downhill descent will include moderate and steep slopes, rocks and roots. The name Nobscot is derived from the Algonquin word Penobscot, "the place where the rocks open out", but the colonial settlers in the area shortened it to Nobscot. We'll learn some of its rich history from an experienced field guide, Susan Feist. We'll visit 2 grave sites of the 18 & 19 centuries, and observe abundant resources in surrounding nature. Susan is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide, and has worked as a Teacher-Naturalist at the Assabet Wildlife Refuge and Drumlin Farm. She also lived in Sudbury for 15 years and is descended from the early settlers of the town. Participants should wear hiking boots or trail shoes. Be prepared for slippery dry leaves, slides, rocks, or possibly muddy conditions. Wear warm, moisture wicking layers appropriate for the weather. Bring the following in your Day Pack: snacks or lunch, at least 1 liter of water, a warm hat and gloves, and a wind/rain jacket. Bring hiking poles if you use them. Meeting location will be emailed to participants about 2 days prior to the hike. Inclement weather such as steady rain, ice, snow, or thunderstorms may cancel the hike.
