Overview

This is the first of 4 advanced winter backpacking trips and is designed as a refresher for past participants of the Worcester Chapter's intro. to winter backpacking workshop/progressive series of backpacking trips. Others will be considered depending on experience level. All participants will be screened to assess their recent experience with winter backpacking. Hike high, sleep low! We will hike up to, and down from, the summit of Mt. Cardigan with full winter backpacks. Planned route is ~ 6 miles on average and strenuous terrain; we'll ascend via Manning to Firescrew, Mowglis to Cardigan; descend via Clark, Holt-Clark Cut-off, Holt, Manning. The actual route we take will depend on weather and trail conditions. We will camp low in the group campsite off the Manning trail. This will provide you with the opportunity to pitch your tent, cook outside, and sleep outdoors in winter conditions after a good day's trek!. Test your gear, and yourself, to see what works and what needs to be adjusted before Trip #2. Note: If unsure about gear choices, bring additional gear you think you might need and leave it in your car. The group camp site is ~ 1 mile from where we will park so you can always trek to your car to get that extra item and bring it back to camp. Limited to 7 (including leader/co-leader) outdoor adventurers who embrace winter!
