Mount Major,
New Hampshire, Lakes Region,
NH
This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of the program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please visit: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w_4evBZ-fTs17Ha4H8AwhfdRI2FRK1HWvlLR00OTRks/edit?usp=sharing If you still have questions, email us at [email protected] We'll make a loop over Mt Major and Straightback Mountain. Each has fantastic views, weather permitting: from Major, you can look north and east across Winnipesaukee; from Straightback, there is an excellent view south across the valley. The exact route depends on conditions, but will be about 5.4 miles with about 1600 feet of climbing. There are short sections of somewhat steep ledges, and parts of this hike are fully exposed to the wind. This is primarily an instructional trip and we will move at the pace of the slowest hiker. This pace is likely to be moderate to somewhat relaxed. We expect the hike to take approximately 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 hours, highly dependent on conditions. This trip is suitable for WHP participants with a solid base of three-season hiking experience and regular exercise. The main gear list is the WHP's Winter Day Hiking Equipment Checklist: https://hb.amcboston.org/images/docs/Gear_lists/Winter_Dayhike_equip.pdf We may or may not need snowshoes, depending on conditions. It's recommended to bring crampons if you have them, although microspikes should be sufficient. For face protection, face mask and ski goggles can be handy, but sunglasses and a neck gaiter are enough. If you are thinking of purchasing equipment just for this trip, we recommend that you contact the leaders beforehand to discuss the tradeoffs. Leave some space in your pack for group gear, which will be distributed at the tralihead. (Varies, but usually about the size of a Nalgene bottle and weighing a pound or two.) To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. Backup plan: if possible, cut back to just Major or just Straightback. Otherwise Locke's Hill.
