Overview

OVERVIEW: This is a moderate one night backpacking trip. This is a low stakes chance to practice camping in cold weather. The backpacking distance is one mile into a group site with picnic tables. We will also hike a few miles without packs both Saturday and Sunday, partly on the AT. There are vault toilets in a real building. There is water -- needs treating. We will have a campfire in a fire ring. With the short pack distance, you can carry a super-warm sleeping bag, two sleeping pads and extra layers, all to keep you warm. It may go below freezing, but snow is unlikely. There is little elevation. If possible, attend the Dec. 11 ZOOM Dueling Backpacks program with these leaders (link below). This is suitable for adults and families with older children. Sky Meadows Virginia State Park is only one hour from Arlington VA. SATURDAY (1 mile with backpacks; 5 miles without packs) On Saturday, we will backpack into our group campsite, set up camp, eat lunch, and then do a loop day-hike that is partially on the AT. SUNDAY (4 mile day-hike, 1 mile with packs) On Sunday, we will chose another loop for a day-hike and then put on our packs for the 1-mile return to the cars. Leave No Trace: This trip follows Leave No Trace principles, which means all leftover food and toiletries must be packed out.

Retired from a career in the healthcare industry, I am now pursuing a passion for adventuring outdoors, seeking to imbue others with the same spirit. Since hiking and backpacking have always been favorite activities, I have recently begun working with volunteer crews to improve local trails, leading me to fully appreciate the back-breaking work and dedication of others, which countless outdoors enthusiasts enjoy so routinely.
