Overview

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by emailing the trip leader. Limited to 10 hikers. Anyone who has not previously hiked with the leader should provide recent hiking experience. This hike is not for beginners. Mount Beacon is the highest peak of the Hudson Highlands, south of Beacon, NY. This 4-mile out and back hike begins on the casino (red) trail by climbing 152 metal stairs to the first steep, rocky and dirt trails. There is a 1,377 ft elevation gain. There is constant, strenuous ascending for around 1.3 miles which provides a good cardio workout. Highlights include the old incline railroad track which went up the mountain, the old rail house and machinery, casino lookout, stone foundation remnants and a 60 ft fire tower at the summit of South Beacon. There are nice views along the way and great views at the fire tower. You do not need to climb the fire tower to enjoy the 360-degree views. On a clear day you can see NYC in the distance. Be prepared for wind near the fire tower. We will have a brief snack break at the casino lookout and lunch at the fire tower before heading back. Please wear appropriate hiking boots/shoes (no sneakers). Trekking poles are highly recommended. Please remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, gloves, and hat. Remember to wear layers of clothing. Meet up time for registered hikers only is 9:45am at trailhead at Mount Beacon Park with a start time of 10am. Registered hikers will be emailed a few days prior to the hike with any additional information. Driving directions - I-84 W to Exit 44 toward Beacon/Fishkill.
