Massachusetts, Berkshires,
NH
This trip is part of the Boston Chapter Winter Hiking Program (WHP) and is only open to enrolled participants of that program. If you would like more information about the WHP, please visit: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w_4evBZ-fTs17Ha4H8AwhfdRI2FRK1HWvlLR00OTRks/edit?usp=sharing . If you still have questions, email us at [email protected]. Join us for a day hike to Galehead Mountain. While Galehead is one of the lowest four thousand footers at 4,029', winter road closures make it a challenging hike. We will hike Galehead via an out-and-back route. Distance is approximately 11.5 miles round trip with 2,700' of elevation gain. Prospective participants should have completed another winter hike (WHP or otherwise) to a four thousand footer of at least ~8 miles round trip with at least ~2,500' of elevation gain. Participants must have a full complement of winter hiking gear including multiple layers of non-cotton clothing, 400g winter hiking boots, microspikes, and mountaineering snowshoes. Full crampons, ice axe, and above tree line gear are not required for this hike. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. No specific backup plan for this hike--if the weather isn't good on the 8th, we would probably try to switch to Sunday, March 9, but we probably wouldn't switch to another peak.
