Please join us for a wonderful winter's morning hike! Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary, a Massachusetts Audubon Society property, was once a working cranberry farm. The largest freshwater ecological restoration in the Northeast began in 2010, and over the next decade, a natural habitat for abundant wildlife and fish was re-established. Additionally, preserving the wetlands supports both flood control and protection of the natural water supply from drought. The project's significance has been recognized in the context of growing climate change. We will hike approximately 5.5 miles at a moderate pace over generally well-maintained trails that pass through grasslands, an Atlantic white cedar swamp, a pine and oak forest, and along cold water streams. A scenic overlook provides a sense of the scope of the restoration. The trails are slightly rolling with a total elevation gain of less than 200 feet. We will stop as needed and enjoy a midway stop for a brief lunch or snack, weather permitting. This hike is appropriate for all who are comfortable with the distance and possible trail conditions. Please wear waterproof hiking shoes or boots, and carry at least a liter of water and snacks/lunch. Dress in layers (not cotton) appropriate for the weather predictions. Since we will be hiking in several unsheltered areas, be prepared for windy conditions. Trail conditions may require MICROspikes or other traction devices. The hike will be cancelled for steady rain or winter conditions that would pose a safety risk. The group will be limited to fifteen hikers plus the three leaders. Specific information, including directions to the trailhead, will be sent to all who register two days before the hike. Dogs are not allowed on the property. You can find more information about Tidmarsh and a trail map at: massaudubon.org/tidmarsh. We look forward to hiking with you!
