A joint AMC Boston and SEM chapter XC skiing trip lodge to lodge with stays at AMC Medawisla and West Branch Pond Camp. Experience the beauty and joy of the Maine North Woods in winter. XCountry skiers with intermediate skills will find this trip enjoyable. Itinerary - 3 nights lodge to lodge We will meet Friday afternoon at West Branch Pond, car spot and drive to AMC Medawisla. We will spend 2 nights, Friday and Saturday, at AMC Medawisla Camp in a bunkhouse, or comfortable cabins. Cabins sleep several people and participants are expected to share a cabin with others as necessary. Saturday the group will explore the variety of advanced beginner to intermediate trails available around Medawisla: including either nearby Shaw Mountain, Trout Mountain and a loop trail around 2nd Roach Pond if conditions allow. Advanced skiers might enjoy skiing the Skyline Trail on Shaw Mountain. Snow shoeing is also an option. Sunday morning the group will ski 9 miles with elevation gain ~ 600 feet to reach West Branch Pond Camp. A gear shuttle will bring your bag from lodge to lodge. All lodging in Cabins, and the cabins sleep several people and participants are expected to share a cabin with others as necessary. At West Branch Pond there is a variety of advanced beginner and advanced intermediate ski trails, some on the flanks of White Cap Mountain and others that follow the West Branch of the Pleasant River. Several snowshoe trails are also available. Easier skiing on the loop around West Branch Pond. Trip Ends Monday Feb 10. Meals and Lodging 2 Nights at AMC Medawisla includes linen and meals. (2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches) 1 Night at West Branch Pond Camp, privately owned (not AMC) and has been in the Sterling family for over 100 years. Dinner and Breakfast with pack lunch provided. Bring your own sleeping bag and towels. Shared Bathroom with shower at both locations. Medawisla and West Branch Pond are the only camps in the Maine Wilderness area that you can drive to directly and park. Difficulty Rating: This trip is rated moderate to vigorous. This ski trip is targeted at intermediate XC skiers. This means skiers who can: *use classic-style, narrow skis with or without metal edges. NOTE: If it's icy, skis with light metal edges is recommended. You can rent skis and other equipment at Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville *ski 15-20 kilometers per day for 3 days in a row at a moderate pace ranging between 3.5-5 kilometers/hour *Climb/descend hilly terrain at moderate pace without difficulty.
