Lake Massabesic gets its name from a Native American word meaning "the place of much water", quite appropriately, as the lake covers over 2,500 acres in Manchester and Auburn, NH, and has a storage capacity of 15 billion gallons. The Lake Massabesic watershed covers over 42 square miles, and includes portions of Manchester, Auburn, Candia, Chester, Hooksett, and a small section of Allenstown. Since 1874, Lake Massabesic has served as the drinking water supply, and currently supplies drinking water for over 159,000 people in the regional Manchester area. The Manchester Waterworks has been protecting land in this watershed since the 1870s and now has protected over 8,000-acres. We will begin our hike at 10:00 AM, and expect to hike about 4.5-miles at a relaxed pace on the forest roads and woodland trails, as we work our way to our destination, Battery Point. Our hike will take us though land owned by the NH Audubon Society and Manchester Water Works. Battery Point, which will offer us a great view of Lake Massabesic, will be a great spot to have lunch. Bring lunch/snacks and plenty of water. Battery Point was once the site of the Massabesic Hotel until a fire destroyed it in 1903. The hotel was a popular resort on Lake Massabesic in the 1800s. The hotel was built by the Cogswell Family c.1800, and it was the first of many hotels to be built around the lake. The weather is getting colder so remember to dress in layers and avoid cotton materials. As it is hunting season, wear something that's hunter orange. A garden kneeling pad or a piece of an old yoga mat or sleeping pad are useful items to sit on during breaks.
