An out-and-back hike on the Mattabesett Trail of around 3 miles over Bear Rock with views of the surrounding area and to the shore of Miller's Pond with water views. There is rocky terrain in places and some moderate ups and downs with lots of recent leaf drop so hike may be more challenging than implied by "official" rating (which is only based on distance and elevation gain). Meet at 10:00 am at Harvey Road trailhead. Dogs welcome. Rain cancels. Recommended that hikers wear some orange as most of hike is in state forest. Lunch stop afterwards if there is interest. From junction of Rtes. 79 and 17 take Rte. 79 south and an immediate left onto Higganum Rd, go 1.5 miles to stop sign at junction with Bear Rock Rd, continue right on Higganum Rd 0.5 miles to Harvey Road on left, proceed 0.45 miles to trail crossing with roadside pull-off.
