Overview

Join us on a beautiful hike up Galehead Mountain (4024) and the Twins (North Twin - 4,761', and South Twin - 4,902') three of NH 4,000 footers. Weather permitting, we will be able to enjoy some phenomenal views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness and Franconia Ridge. This day hike is about 14 miles out and back hike with multiple stream crossings and a total elevation gain of about 4,400 feet. There is a strong possibility that the trail will be snowy and it will certainly be icy, so your traction systems need to be sharp. We will aim to hike at a moderate pace and participants should expect to be moving almost the entire time--your winter systems for modulating body temperature / managing moisture need to be well practiced. Please be an experienced winter hiker in good physical condition. Please also review the related link for the gear checklist. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out. We will hold Sunday, December 8th as a back up date.

I've been hiking in the whites for 50 years--GA-->AT-->ME '81; grid #104; I also am a bike tourer (x-country in '86); expert telemark skier; winter camper; mountaineer (2X rainier; 2X grand teton, all self guided); I hike long, hard, and fast--averaged 27.5 mpd on a 500 mile section hike of the AT Nov '22. When I'm not leading hard/fast, I really enjoy introducing novices to the outdoors--through their joy I am reminded of when I was younger. ask me about being chased by bears :-)
