TRAIL TRACE THE BLUE HILLS - IN THE WINTER! SATURDAY SERIES For the 3 Winter months we are going to hike every trail in the Blue Hills - this hiking series is known as "Trail Tracing". "Trail Tracing" - Every Saturday, we will pick a new area and hike all (as in every inch of every trail) of the trails in that area. We will hike from 10 am - 2 or 3 pm, covering about 8 miles each trip, depending on the elevation gain that day. We are saying to plan for a 3 pm finish as we may need more time some weeks depending on the route and the trail conditions. Some weeks will be 'flat', like Fowl Meadow - then there are weeks where we will climb Great Blue, or Buck Hill, multiple times. Sometimes, this seems a little silly at first, as we hike some long out- and-back just to touch the fence at the end, or walk all around the little triangles at intersections. But it's excellent exercise, great fun, and we have a Boston Chapter Winter Trail Trace Patch for those who finish their map this winter season. We will send out an Information Sheet several days before each hike to give you all the information you need, such as parking, section we will hike, and our best estimate of the elevation gain and trail conditions as we know them at that time. "Required Equipment" - Winter hiking clothes, insulated hiking boots, hiking poles and traction equipment such as micro-spikes are required on all hikes. Snowshoes must be brought to the trailhead after the first major snowfall. All hikers should bring a backpack with sufficient water, lunch, extra layers and a personal first aid kit. "Weather" - Thunderstorms or extreme winds will delay, cancel, or shorten trips. We won't cancel because of rain. Active snowstorms may impact us, not because of the snow while hiking, but because of travel and parking.
