Bear Brook State Park is over 10,000 acres, and straddles across four towns, and offers great opportunities for hiking. This park is also surrounded by other large swaths of protected land, including land owned by Manchester Waterworks and the Bear Paw land trust. Our hike will start at 9:00 AM, and we will explore the northern section of this large park, hiking about 6-miles with about 650 feet of elevation gain. Our hike will start on Bear Brook Trail, which will take us along Bear Brook (this park's namesake) and Cascade Falls, and eventually to Catamount Hill, which will be an excellent spot for lunch and views. From here we will follow several trails looping our way back to the parking area. Remember to bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. A garden keeling pad or a piece of an old yoga map or sleeping pad are useful items to sit on during lunch breaks. Remember it is winter so dress warm and in layers, and no cotton clothing, especially dungarees. Weather and trail conditions could change at any time so wear winter boots and MICROspikes, or equivalent stabilizer for traction on snow, ice, and frozen terrain. And gaiters are helpful to keep ice/snow from falling inside your winter footwear. Also, hiking poles are helpful crossing streams and working around muddy area, as well as maintaining balance over long stretches of ice. As it will still be hunting season in NH for something, wearing something hunter orange is a good idea.
