Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants how to Identify, Understand, and Respond to mental health and substance-use challenges and crises. This course is taught by experienced AMC Volunteer Bill Fogel, supporting you in applying MHFA skills in the context of AMC activities and programs. The course topics will cover: • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges • How to interact with a person in crisis • How to connect a person with help • Trauma and resilience • National and local resources for mental health support • Self-care Participants will learn a 5-step action plan that includes: 1. Assess for Suicide and Harm 2. Listen Non-Judgmentally 3. Give Reassurance and Information 4. Encourage Appropriate Professional Help 5. Encourage Self-Help and Other Support Strategies Hybrid Course The course will be taught in a hybrid/in-person format which requires completion of a 2-hour self-paced learning module prior to the in-person instruction day. The in-person course will run from 9:00am - 4:00 pm. After successful completion of the course participants will be able to access a MHFA test and program evaluation which leads to national certification through the National Council of Mental Wellbeing.
