Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge 769 Sachuest Point Road, Middletown,

This is a busy season, but it's always a good idea to make some time for yourself. A gentle hike outdoors is just the thing! Join the AMC Narragansett Chapter for Solstice by the Sea. Our hike is a 2.4-mile loop near Newport. A scenic ocean walk, Sachuest Point is part of the National Wildlife Refuge System. The easy trails are well maintained and there is a very gentle 62- foot elevation gain. Hikers need to be comfortable with this, but we will be moving at a slow to moderate pace and stopping for photographs. It will take us about 1.5 hours to complete. Bring your smartphone or camera, we may see the brightly plumaged harlequin ducks! They winter on the refuge from November to March. Sturdy walking shoes are always a wise choice; hiking boots are also appropriate. As we descend to the rocky beach at a couple of points, even walking poles are useful. We will make a wreath on the beach of natural materials to celebrate the arrival of winter. 1 liter of water and a snack are essential on even the gentlest of hikes. No dogs on this hike.
