This 6+ mile circular hike includes the Tunxis and Tunxis side trails. There is a variety of terrain with a few short scrambles, a viewpoint and several ups and downs with a short section looking down on the Farmington River as it rushes through Satans Kingdom. We'll retrace our steps above the gorge then descend to edge of the river - a good spot for a break. The trail climbs gradually back through the woods to rejoin a fairly level dirt road back to the cars. Traction devices are required for winter hikes although they may not be needed. Boots or hiking shoes are recommended, dress in layers and hiking poles will be helpful. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Meet at 9:15am for a prompt 9:30 start from the parking lot at the Rte 202 entrance to the Nepaug Forest. REGISTRATION BY E-MAIL IS REQUIRED. Directions: From the south take Rte 8 north to exit 44 - Torrington Rte 202. Turn right (east) 7.9 miles. The entrance is on the left, at the top of a short hill. From the east take Rte 44 west to Canton, then left on Rte 202 for 3.1 miles (passing the entrance to the reservoir on the left) and turn right into the Nepaug Forest parking lot.
