Overview

Are you an experienced 3-season backpacker with little to no winter backpacking experience? Experienced winter backpackers and / or backpacking leaders will be intentionally waitlisted. Do you agree to read "To Build a Fire" by Jack London to learn about the extremes of being outside in winter before registering. Do you have or can you borrow ALL of the following equipment which is specific to winter backpacking AND are you willing to describe in detail what you have (defined as brand, model, approximate year bought and last used) with one of the leaders: A. 4-season shelter. B. -20 degree Fahrenheit degree sleep system. This includes a winter rated bag with an additional quilt or liner which is required to boost the rating to -20 degrees. C. Inflatable winter mattress which had an R-value of at least 7.0, AND a closed cell pad. D. Double layer winter boots (with removable liners). E. Snowshoes, Micro spikes and Winter Hiking Poles (with snow baskets). F. Insulated winter coat AND insulated winter pants to hold in warmth while sedentary in camp. G. White gas stove with a full 22 oz fuel bottle, 2 liter pot and either water bottles in insulated holders AND/OR a double wall insulated vacuum bottle. H. Do you agree to review the Winter Backpacking Gear List included in the link below? If the answer to ALL of these is YES then please join us on an overnight backpacking trip where we will practice the basics of winter backpacking. Over the weekend we will hike ~2 miles into a backcountry primitive campsite where our only goal is to thrive in the adverse conditions of winter. Once camp is set up we will go on a 4 mile round trip day hike. Note: Despite average lows of 12 degrees, the temperature at the time of our trip may be significantly colder. The temperature on my very first winter backpacking trip to this exact same area was -17 degrees Fahrenheit (ambient and before windchill). Note: The trip will be cancelled if the forecasted snowfall calls for more than 12 inches of snow either the day before our trip or at any time during our trip.

Leader

I love backpacking in all seasons, canoe camping in the Adirondacks, and spend over 3 weeks a year sleeping outside. I've completed 1,930 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
