Overview

Join us for a 20s and 30s day hike to Mt. Pierce (4,313'). Our hike will be an approximately 6-mile out-and-back hike with approximately 2,400' of elevation gain. While the distance is relatively modest for White Mountains hikes, the views from the summit of Mt. Pierce are (weather-depending, of course!) fantastic-directly up the main ridge of the Southern Presidentials with Mts. Washington and Jefferson in the distance. This hike is appropriate for hikers with experience hiking other four thousand footers of similar elevation gain and distance in winter conditions in the White Mountains, Green Mountains, Maine, or Adirondack Mountains in the last year. Because of the distance involved, this hike is NOT appropriate for first-time winter hikers. Microspikes and mountaineering snowshoes are required for this hike as well as experience utilizing both in winter conditions. In addition, we are requiring that participants have winter boots with 400g of insulation, knee-high gaiters (essential for keeping snow out of your boots!) multiple layers of non-cotton insulation that can be "mixed and matched" as needed (fleece and puffer jackets work particularly well), one heavier jacket (a heavy down "bivvy parka" is ideal, but a ski jacket or general heavier winter coat is fine if you don't have one), a warm winter hat, and some sort of wind shell jacket (Gore-TEX is ideal, but a rain jacket also works fine). Please note that many boots branded as "winter hiking boots" have only 200g of insulation, which is generally insufficient for winter hiking in the White Mountains. Depending on weather conditions, be prepared for a strenuous all-day hike and potential winter conditions with cold, wind, ice, snow, and the possibility of breaking trail. Please be an experienced winter hiker in good physical condition, with full winter gear including insulated winter boots, microspikes, mountaineering snowshoes, and multiple clothing layers. To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions, early road closings, or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified in advance or during the weekend.

Ian is an avid hiker who completed the NH 48 in May 2023 and the Adirondack 46 in November 2024. He's now (slowly) working on the Winter 48 and the Northeast 111. When he is not hiking in the northeast, Ian likes to hike in Arizona, ski, run, and row on the Charles.
